DPPA Purposes Required

U.S. Federal law requires those requesting information on vehicles and vehicle owners to disclose one of 14 authorized purposes for the use if the info.  When placing an order for vehicle or owner information, customers must select a DPPA purpose from 1-14, reflecting their choice of the following:

    1.  Legitimate government agency functions.
    2. Use in matters of motor vehicle safety, theft, emissions, product recalls.
    3. Motor vehicle market research and surveys.
    4. "Legitimate" business needs in transactions initiated by the individual to verify accuracy of personal information.
    5. Use in connection with a civil, criminal, administrative or arbitral proceeding.
    6. Research activities and statistical reports, so long as personal information is not disclosed or used to contact individuals.
    7. Insurance activities.
    8. Notice for towed or impounded vehicles.
    9. Use by licensed investigators or security service.
  10. Use by private toll transportation facilities.
  11. In response to requests for individual records if the State has obtained express consent from the individual.
  12. For bulk marketing distribution if State has obtained express consent from the    individual.
  13. Use by any requestor where the reqestor can show written consent of the individual.
  14. For any other legitimate State use if it relates to motor vehicle or public safety.
